벌써 이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 전쟁이 시작된지 일주일이 지났습니다. 갈수록 극한 상황으로 치닫으며 군인은 물론이고 무고한 시민들까지 목숨을 잃거나 영영 돌이킬 수 없는 상처를 입고 있는 모습이 너무나 안타깝네요. 반기문 UN 사무총장을 비롯해서 세계 여러 국가들이 이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 휴전을 촉구하고 있는데요, 미국은 역시 그 가운데에서도 강하게 이스라엘을 지지하고 있습니다. 곧 미국 대통령이 될 오바마는 아직은 부시가 대통령이라며 자신에게 날아오는 화살을 부시에게로 돌리고 이 전쟁에 대해 함구하고 있지만, 역사상 가장 무슬림에게 호의적인 미국 대통령이 될것으로 생각되는 오바마 역시 이스라엘의 팔레스타인 공격에 대한 정당성을 지지하는것 같습니다.
안타까운 상황이 지속되는 가운데, 오늘은 전쟁에 관련된 영어 표현을 알아볼까 하네요.
"status quo"
status quo는 라틴어에서 온 표현으로 현(現)상태라는 뜻입니다. 위키피디아에 의하면 (출처) 14세기에 외교 용어로 사용된 "status quo"의 원래 표현은 "in statu quo res erant ante bellum"인데, ante는 before라는 뜻의, bellum은 war라는 뜻의 라틴어입니다. 그래서 원래 표현의 뜻은 "전쟁 전(前)의 원래 상태로"가 되겠네요. 이 표현에서 파생/변형/축약되어 "status quo ante bellum", "status quo ante" 또는 "status quo"같은 표현이 나왔습니다. 이제는 전쟁/외교 뿐만 아니라 일반적인 표현으로도 쓰이는 status quo는 그만큼 약간은 수준있는 표현이지요. 어떤 분야에서든지 현(現)상태를 말할 때 쓰일 수 있습니다.
다음은 status quo가 쓰인 현재 벌어지고 있는 이스라엘-팔레스타인 전쟁에 관한 기사입니다. 그런데 아무래도 전쟁 관련 기사에서 쓰이는 status quo는 일반적으로 쓰이는 현(現)상태의 뜻 보다는 전쟁 전(前)의 원래 상태의 뜻이 더 강합니다.
